Shakira is the second most successful female Latin singer of all time (behind Gloria Estefan), even surpassing the hugely popular career of Selena. She has won two Grammys, several Latin Grammys, and her single "Hips Don't Lie" has smashed numerous singles records. Despite her popular English albums and tours in the United States Shakira has stayed close to her Latin roots, releasing albums in both Spanish and English. Shakira's most recent album, Sale el Sol, has been praised by critics since its release and has topped the Latin music charts. The album also inspired The Sun Comes Out World Tour in 2011; originally a 2010 tour so popular that it has added international concert dates in 2011.
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Columbia. Shakira's father was a writer and inspired her to compose her first poem at the age of four, closely followed by her discovery of belly dancing at a Middle Eastern restaurant. Shakira released her first albums, Magia and Peligro, before graduating high school. While the albums failed commercially, it did garner the artist some popularity on the radio and a small following of fans on small tours.
Shakira came back to Sony in 1995 with a style inspired by the success of contemporary pop stars like Alanis Morissette and Jewel. Hard work paid off and Pies Descalzos became a hit with critics, as well as with music fans in Columbia, Argentina, and Brazil. Shakira's 1998 album, Dónde Están Los Landrones?, fared even better, even gaining Shakira two Latin Grammys. With the interest of Americans piqued, Shakira created her next album, Laundry Service, as an English crossover album to gain a foothold in mainstream US music. The album was released in 2001 and sold over 200,000 copies in the first week, leading to international headlining tours.
Shakira had to sidestep her tours and interviews in order to get back into the studio to record her next album, Fijación Oral Vol. 1, which was released in 2005. Despite the predictions that Shakira couldn't match the success of her previous album, the Spanish-language album nearly outperformed Laundry Service. While volume two didn't fare as well as its predecessor, Oral Fixation Vol. 2 still spawned the hugely popular hit singles "Don't Bother" and "Hips Don't Lie" (featuring Wyclef Jean).
Luckily for Shakira, she returned to her previous style and success with the release of her latest album, 2010's Sale el Sol. The bilingual album has been well-received by both critics and fans alike, both groups noting the album's rock infusion. Fans are also fond of her current The Sun Comes Out World Tour, which is currently on the European leg of 2011 concert dates. The 2011 tour currently has roughly a month and half worth of tour dates left, and Shakira can currently be found in Eastern Europe. The 2011 concert criss-crosses across Europe, visiting countries like Croatia, Denmark, Russia, Spain, France, and Switzerland.
